Before you visit a Samaritan, Inc. food pantry, there is some important information that you may need in order to make the process as smooth as possible. By addressing common questions, Samaritan, Inc. can help food recipients navigate the resources available and assure they receive the food assistance they need.
In the Q&A section below, we have compiled some frequently asked questions and their answers, designed to maximize your experience at any one of our food pantries.
If you do not find the answer to your specific question below, please reach out to us through the Contact Us link to send an email directly to the Samaritan, Inc. food pantries.
You do not need to qualify for, or receive any other assistance, in order to receive food from a Samaritan, Inc. food pantry. Anyone who is in need of food is welcome to visit any one of our local food pantries.
Samaritan, Inc. is a non-profit organization that picks up food from the local Hannaford, Walmart, and Sam’s Club and distributes this donated food to eight local food pantries in six Bangor area towns: Bangor, Garland, Glenburn, Hampden, Hermon, and Levant. See detailed information about food pantry locations at the Get Food link.
When visiting for the first time, please verify the days and hours of distribution and learn about distribution processes. Please arrive close to the distribution time.
Vehicles line up at a designated location, and food is distributed on a first come, first served basis. The distribution process cannot begin until the van has picked up the donated foods from the supermarket and they have been sorted and packaged. You will be asked your name, town you live in, and how many people in your household. One box will be distributed per household.
Be prepared to wait in line. Each pantry strives to be as efficient as possible while adhering to health and safety guidelines. Please be patient.
If you need someone to pick up food from a pantry for you, please send the individual with a letter giving them permission to pick up food on your behalf. Depending on the amount of food available on any given day, picking up food for someone else is not guaranteed.
Since the COVID pandemic, shopping onsite is not an option. Volunteers carefully select a variety of vegetables, fruits, meats, dairy, deli, bread, and desserts depending on what was donated by the vendors that day and the amount of families requesting food.
Yes, you do not have to be in a vehicle to receive food. Walk-ins and people using public transportation are welcome.
